Garments Merchandising | Merchandiser and their activities in The Garments Industry and Buying House

 Merchandising is an English word that actually comes from the word merchandising. Merchandise means goods and products are bought and sold to the customer. The person who does this is called a merchandiser.



However, according to the textile business, merchandising means receiving orders from the buyer, sorting all the necessary raw materials, executing the final product order from the sample, ensuring the delivery of the order to the buyer and collecting the price of the product from the buyer.


From the above definition we get the idea about merchandiser and merchandising. Now I will discuss merchandising in detail in this article.


Merchandisers act as a bridge between buyers and producers. The buyer placed the merchandiser and merchandiser shift order with the factory or manufacturer.


This is why commodities are the focus of the textile industry.


Due to the different activities of the merchandising process we get three types of merchandising in the textile sector. These are:

Production merchandising

Home Buying Commodities

Visual merchandising

1. Production Merchandising: Production merchandising is related to the merchandising of the factory. All the merchandising work here is in the connected industry connected with garment manufacturing, a lot of work is handled by the merchandiser and everyone does different kinds of work. But they work in a group. As they work,

Marketing Merchandising: The leader of the Merchandising Group works as a marketing merchandiser. They communicate with the buyer, set a date for a meeting, set the price of the product, discuss the price of the product and finally order the impressed buyer about the price and quality of their product. They also work with the buying house.

Plan Product: After receiving an order, another member of the team prepares the time and action sheet. Sheet T&A sheet clearly states the time of all production work and shipment. Here they ensure in-house raw materials, start of bulk production, final inspection time etc.

Sourcing Merchandising: Here all merchandisers work to collect various components such as trims and accessories, yarn and fabric, dyes and chemicals, lab testing etc.

Sample Developing Products: Here Junior Merchandiser works to follow sample development. He assures the senior merchandiser that the samples are produced with care and according to the buyer PO sheet.

Product Development Merchandising: The product development merchandiser works to ensure the production process and product quality. They follow the whole manufacturing process to make sure the garment is made as per the buyer’s instructions.


2. Home Buying Commodities: "Buying a home", if you think about these two words for only 5 - 10 seconds, you will get the exact meaning of the house you bought. Yes! This means buying something from this place or selling something to the customer (buyer).


The purchasing house is a third party who receives orders from the buyer and sells their (buyer) clothing. However, they do not produce clothing or any kind of product. Here they act as media between buyer and manufacturer.


Originally, they (buying houses) placed orders with local manufacturers who were able to produce export-quality garments. There are some groups of merchandisers in the buying house who maintain all the process of ordering. Purchased home merchandisers work separately like manufacturing or factory merchandisers. As they work,

Expenses: First, they calculate the cost of clothing with their profit. It then offers it to the buyer. If the buyer agrees with the price, they place an order.

Sourcing Manufacturer: After receiving the order, buy a home merchandiser by sourcing a manufacturer to produce garments. Here, they offer somewhat reduced prices for garment production.

Visiting Industry: The merchandiser inspects the manufacturing industry to follow the manufacturing process and informs the purchased home of up-to-date product information.

There are some tasks that can be done to buy a home buying product such as sending and approving samples, arranging final inspection etc.


3. Visual Merchandising: Visual merchandising is a type of merchandising where a merchandiser works as an interior designer. They perfectly decorate the retailer shop or buying house. They present various eye-catching clothing items to show to the customer in front of the showroom. There is a goal of visual merchandisers here and these are maximizing sales. Sometimes they decorate the brand’s showroom for the occasional holiday for summer sales, spring sales, Christmas sales, and so on.

You can see that these three merchandising have some common activities. Activities include:


They work almost exclusively with buyers, manufacturers as well as customers.

They observe market trends.

Determining the price or cost of the product.

Sourcing the right raw materials for production.

Ensure product quality.

Create time and action sheets.

Product process followup.

Open L / C.

Preparing custom clearance.

Sample development.

Arranging the final inspection and operation process.

The factory furnished merchandise office, bought homes and brand showrooms.

Confirm invoice.

In fact, the merchandiser is the responsible person and the merchandising department is the responsible department to get the order in the shipment process without any problem. They are always busy maintaining hundreds of jobs like buyer, manufacturer, production process, preparation of export documentation etc. So maintaining all this is a difficult task for any merchandiser.
